Batterers Intervention Program

Choices at the Crossroads Batterers Intervention Program's mission is to provide a continuum of assistance to victims and their children through intervention with the men who choose to use violent behavior against them.

Choices at the Crossroads Batterers Intervention Program strictly adheres to the Standards for Batterers Intervention as set forth by the Ohio Domestic Violence Network.

Choices at the Crossroads Batterers Intervention is an educational program for people who choose to use abusive behavior against their partners and/or other family members.  This is purposeful behavior that is used to achieve a position of power over the victim in an attempt to get them to do what the batterer wants them to do (or not to do).  Because power and control are basic issues of violence, the curriculum is designed to challenge the batterer's attempt to control the victim through the use of physical, psychological, verbal/emotional, sexual and environmental abuse.

Choices' at the Crossroads'groups are offense specific. We do not do couples or family intervention.  For couples intervention to be effective, there has to be equality between the participants.  But there cannot be equality when there are power and control issues and a threat of violence.  Honesty and trust are not possible when one person fears retaliation for revealing real experiences and needs.  Participants come from a wide variety of income levels, occupations, race, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.  Groups are appropriate for individuals over the age of 18 and are available for both male and female offenders.

Participants will learn:

  • That to use abuse is a choice and that people can choose to use non-violent behaviors
  • To take responsibility for their choice of actions
  • To use self-control instead of controlling others
  • To consciously choose their choices instead of reacting to people, events and situations
  • To recognize and understand their feelings
  • And that there is no excuse for violence

Choices at the Crossroads Batterers Intervention groups meet once a week for 26 weeks.  At completion the participant will be expected to attend after-care classes, which are one time per month for six months.

The participant can expect to:

  • Work on overcoming the attitudes and beliefs that perpetuate abuse
  • Share their own experiences and insights to assist other men in their process of change
  • Develop respectful ways of interacting with others
  • Learn non-abusive ways to resolve conflict
  • Learn to accept responsibility for their choice of behaviors
