2nd Chance

2nd Chance is a domestic violence educational program for first time juvenile offenders.  It is a diversionary intervention program that allows the offender an opportunity to learn non-violent strategies to resolve conflicts and to make homes a safer place.

Juveniles commit family violence when they commit an act against a parent, caretaker, sibling, or other household member that is intended to cause physical, psychological or financial damage in order to gain power and control.  Because control is the motivating factor, the behaviors of juveniles who perpetrate family violence are abusive, not some typical teenage rebellion.

Battering is not an isolated or accidental behavior.  It is purposeful behavior that is used by the offender in an attempt to get their own way or to get the victim to do what they want them to do, or not to do.

The 2nd Chance classes are structured so that the participant will learn:

  •
    • That violence is a choice, a dysfunctional destructive choice with negative consequences
    • That nonviolent choices exist as appropriate alternatives
    • That provocation does not justify violence
    • That each person is responsible for their own behavior and blaming the victim is self-defeating
    • That violence impacts the entire family, the extended family as well as the community
    • Specific conflict resolution, communication and anger management skills.
    • That there are no excuses for violence

Each participant will leave the class with a personal action plan as to what you will do when conflicts arise.
